Shaping the Connected Mariner

The What

The addition of remote and autonomous systems into the field of maritime operations creates opportunity, but if we do not manage the relationship between humans and technology, we are likely to introduce new and significant risks. To control these risks, new systems and new ways of operating must be established and overseen by a new highly skilled workforce of combined human - machine decision makers.

The Who

To benefit fully, maritime must upskill, scale, and adopt the use of both new and existing technology by becoming champions of human centred digital transformation. Going forward we should look to empower humans with new skills to work alongside machines, performing shared tasks and using shared decision making.

The How

The MASSPeople working group will safeguard progression in the technology-people partnership underpinning the workforce's changing needs, providing recommendations on new competency standards for inclusion into the International Convention of Standards on Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW).
